For more than forty years, GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) has fought intolerance and bigotry through strategic litigation, policy, legislative advocacy, and public education. We’ve achieved key precedent-setting victories on behalf of the LGBTQ community and for people living with HIV.

Today, our work continues with a commitment to 
racial justice and a focus on the discrimination that occurs at the intersection of race and LGBTQ identity. We’re tracking the counter-movements that are fighting hard to roll back critical achievements. It’s a pivotal time and an important opportunity for a Chief Legal Strategist to join GLAD as the team leader behind our legal strategy and our plans for mobilizing resources for its achievement.

Executive Search for Chief Legal Strategist

It will take an experienced and collaborative executive to lead the GLAD Legal Team. Qualified applicants will have a proven track record of achieving excellence personally and by mobilizing the effort, creativity and perspectives of others. Direct legal experience isn’t required, however a keen understanding of the ways in which litigation, legislation and public education are used to shape public policy and protect civil rights is key to success in the role.  

The search committee recognizes that there is never one right pathway or profile for any position. The committee will be most interested in applications from candidates who can demonstrate a large number of the qualifications outlined in the job description. Some of the key qualifications for the role are outlined below:

  • Personally and professionally driven to advance equity and equality for LGBTQ people with a focus on the intersection of LGBTQ equality and racial justice
  • Dynamic storyteller and persuasive speaker capable of building support for GLAD’s work across diverse audiences and stakeholder groups.
  • Experience defining and leading a state or nation-wide public policy agenda or campaign focused on issues related to structural discrimination, equality and racial justice.
  • Track record of success building positive workplace cultures and of leading professional teams towards the achievement of ambitious goals
  • Ability to build sustainable and productive partnerships with nonprofits, philanthropic partners, academic institutions and policy makers in support of shared goals.
